This is the end my friend

feb272008Quite a bit of excitement in the last couple of days. Tuesday was trade deadline day in the NHL. Murray didn’t do much for the Senators, bringing in Martin Lapointe from Chicago for a sixth-round draft pick. Lapointe isn’t expected to make a big splash on the ice (where he will likely replace the injured Chris Neil), but more for his leadership in the locker room. The big shockers at the trade deadline was Pittsburgh winning out in the Hossa sweepstakes. No one saw that one coming. Everyone believed Hossa would end up in Ottawa or Montreal. The Penguins will definitely be a team to look out for in the playoffs. They certainly won’t be pushed over like they were last year by the Sens. The lack of trades by Ottawa at the 2008 deadline said 2 things to me. Murray was giving a wake up call to the team, telling them they are good enough as it is. Secondly, that Paddock’s time as a coach was running out unless things changed. The Sens showed their appreciation to Murray by losing 4-0 to Boston. This was their first back-to-back zero goal losses since 2000! I thought they hit the bottom of the barrel with the 5-0 loss to Toronto on Monday. I guess I was wrong.

Tuesday night was also the very last show of the Return of the Spice Girls show. If we believe what the Spices have been saying, this was their last show ever… but as a couple of them said, they learned to never say never, so who knows. From the clips I’ve seen, it was a very emotional night, with each girl crying at some part of the concert.

For those like me who watch Stargate: Atlantis, I have but one word to say regarding this week’s episode, and that’s just WOW. I’m not going to spoil it for those who haven’t seen it yet, let’s just say the final 10 seconds were absolutely and totally not expected. There were rumblings that something like this would happen, but not like this. Just wow….

As I was driving home today, I was listening to the Team 1200 (a local sports radio station) when I heard the news that Paddock was fired (along with one of the assistant coaches) and that Murray was stepping back behind the bench for the remainder of the season and playoffs. As much as I knew Paddock’s days were numbered, I didn’t expect it this quick. I thought Paddock might still have 2-3 games left to prove his worth. Now we have to wonder if Murray didn’t want to do this sooner, but wanted to wait until the trade deadline had passed. We as fans just have to hope that this will be a wakeup call to the team, and we’ll see them regain the greatness that they showed last year and at the beginning of this year.

Go Sens Go!

Sens comeback to win 4-3

Sens vs PittAhh Saturdays. I didn’t do much… Just the usual weekend housecleaning and a bit of shoveling. I’m giving away free snow for anyone who wants some. Local pickup only. 🙂

I was a little peeved that CBC carried to Scotts overtime well past 3pm. That meant missing the first 13 minutes of the Sens-Penguins game. However, listening to the game on the radio, it didn’t sound like I missed much. We took 4 penalties in the first period alone. I wonder why the refs seem to pick on us. There were a few very obvious calls that they should have made against the Penguins yet they got away scott free. I watched the game until Pittsburgh scored their 3rd goal. At that point I had to turn off the TV. The Sens were lifeless, were giving away the puck, as usual the defence was pretty much non-existent. At least Emery made some pretty big saves. I always said that if you gave time for the guy to play that he could regain the form he had last year that took us into the playoffs. I’m glad to see that’s happening… but its still a work in progress.

OK, so I turned off the game because it was time to do the weekly grocery thing (I swear being disgusted on how poorly the Sens were playing had nothing to do with it! 😉 ). Imagine my surprise on the way back from the store to turn on the radio and hear that the Sens have come back to tie the game! Paddock must of put a fire under them for the Sens to come back like that. I had to make a quick stop at another store, but I idled in the parking lot to listen to the overtime before heading in. Could they do it? Could they actually win the game? My heart was racing upon hearing the 2 2 on 1 chances that the Penguins had. On the first 2 on 1, you could even hear the puck hit the goalpost over the radio. Then, with 3.2 seconds left, our saviour Alfie put in the puck top shelf to give the Sens their second overtime victory in the last 3 games. We were lucky to go away with a win on this one. Hopefully the slump is at an end and we’ll be clawing our way back to the winning form displayed back in October. For now, we haven’t lost our #1 spot in the eastern conference.

We’re heading off to Montreal today to see the Spice Girls in concert again. We saw them when they played Montreal on January 31st. I’ve been to probably 80-90 concerts in my lifetime (mostly of the rock/metal/alternative kind), but I have to admit that it was one of the best shows I’ve seen. I bought the tickets for the 2nd show as a Valentine’s day gift, but I’ll admit I’m not going to mind seeing them again. If what the girls are saying is true, this is probably the last tour we get to see them in concert (with only 2 shows left after this one).

Sens worries

So the Sens blew another lead yesterday and ended up losing in the shootout. Though they are playing better than they were a few weeks ago, they certainly aren’t playing like they were in Oct/Nov. So if you’ll permit me, I’ll become an armchair quarterback for a few minutes and share some observations and my recommendations.

  • Emery needs to work on his stickside. It seems like all the goals scored last night were through the stickside of the net.
  • We need a big defenceman. Columbus were clearly running us over in our own zone. If we want to win the cup this year, we’ll need to add more grit in that department.
  • Paddock should stick with Emery for a couple more games. He was brilliant in the game vs Philly. He needs some work (see point #1) but I believe he can be our #1. I like Darth Gerber, but he seems to lose all confidence when he lets in a soft goal or 2. That’s not what we need in the playoffs.
  • Put a fire under the Pizza line. They’ve been almost non existent since the Habs game.
  • Don’t break up the Kelly Vermette Stillman line. They’re producing and are only going to get better.

That’s enough of that. Now to change the mood, here’s a funny video I saw the other day. Enjoy!
