Rapid Fire #1

rapid-fire (rap′id fīr′)

adjective

done, delivered, proceeding, or carried on swiftly and sharply

passchendaele Finally, a world war movie that shows the Canadian point of view. A powerful film about the sacrifice made by Canadian soldiers during World War I. Written by and starring Paul Gross (of Due South fame), who based the story on war stories shared by his grandfather who fought at Passchendaele.

It could have used a little less romance and a little more action, but regardless its still a very enjoyable film.

I rate it a 7 out of 10.

lost This 5th season of Lost is starting off on the right foot. The 3rd and 4th season sometimes seemed to lack direction but the ship has been steered back on course. Inhabitants of the island are now travelling back and forth through time, having an adverse effect on some of the survivors. Some members of the Oceanic Six realize that they have to find a way back to the island. That their destiny is to be on the island and not back with regular civilisation.

The best season since season 2. If you stopped watching in the last couple of years, do yourself a favor and start watching this show again. Its the best show on television.

clouston-cory Craig Hartsburgh was fired from the head coach position of the Ottawa Senators earlier this week after a big loss against the Washington Capitals. He was replaced by Cory Clouston, the head coach of the Sens’ farm team in Binghamton. Though I feel the problems are a lot deeper than the coaching, it was obvious that Hartsburgh could not find a way to inspire his players. He was a good coach, just not for this team at this time. His defensive minded system did not gel with the offensively-built Senators. I’m reserving judgement on Clouston until he’s had 5-6 games under his belt, but so far the team is playing with a lot more passion and heart. Lets just hope they keep it up.

wrathofthelichking A couple of weeks ago I received an email from Blizzard offering me a free 10 day trial of the World of Warcraft expansion Wrath of the Lich King. This offer couldn’t have come at a better time. I was already itching to try it, and having given up smoking I wanted to do something to occupy my time. It was great to catch up with people in the game that I had last spoken to over a year ago when I quit playing.

So far this expansion is more fun to play than the previous expansion Burning Crusades. There’s less grinding, more quests, more variety and just more fun.  Much to my wife’s dismay, once my free 10 day trial was over I continued to play but just as a ‘casual’. There’s no way I’m going to be a raider again, as that requires a huge timesink that I do not have or which to give.

Quit Smoking I’m on day 14 of quitting smoking. The cravings still come and go, but less often and with less intensity. Every day I’m breaking more habits where I smoked in certain situations. It hasn’t been easy, but at this point I figure that there’s no point to have suffered for these 2 weeks and take up smoking again.

Now I’m just a little worried of what will happen when I stop taking the Champix. I’ve read some horror stories that the cravings come back bigtime once you stop the pills. I guess I’ll find out in a few weeks.

andre cornellier Last week the OC Transpo strike that’s paralyzed the city since early December finally came to an end. Both the city and the union agreed to go to binding arbitration. Funny how they both agree to that just as the Federal government was ready to introduce a back to work bill and just before Obama’s visit to our capital. By going to arbitration both sides save face and can state that they didn’t give in to their demands.

Buses are expected to start hitting the streets this weekend, but isn’t expected to be running at full capacity until April or May.

Lets just hope that we don’t have to go through this again in a couple of years when the new contract will be up.

Quit Smoking Diary Day 5: Still Alive

quitsmoking2 I’ve made it to the 5 day mark of being smoke free! I have to admit that I’m proud of myself. I really didn’t think that I’d have the willpower to make it this long, but so far, so good.

I’ve had a few bad cravings, mostly first thing in the mornings and after suppers. I’ve also had small cravings throughout the day, but that has more to do with breaking the habit of smoking and not with the nicotine addiction.  The bad cravings seem to be decreasing in intensity with each passing day.

Physically I felt some changes within the first couple of days. My breathing is better and ‘cleaner’, and my sense of smell is better.  I have been feeling more tired, but that’s a common short term side effect. The only downside to this all is that I’ve probably gained a pound or two. I’ve been trying to stick to eating fruits and nuts when snacking so at least I’m having something healthy. Gaining a couple of pounds is worth if it means kicking this bad addictive habit. I’ve also been building my jaw muscles by chewing a lot of sugar-free gum. Every time I get a craving I pop a gum into my mouth and the craving goes away after a few minutes. Chewing gum only didn’t help a handful of times so far.

5 days down and 55 to go before I will consider myself an ex-smoker.

Quit Smoking Diary-Day 1

Quit Smoking The quit date I had chosen for myself is finally here. I’m on day 15 of taking Champix and I had my last cigarette at 9:30am this morning. I wasn’t planning on having one this morning, but the urge was too strong. I didn’t feel too bad about it. Last night I talked it over with my wife and decided that at most I’ll have 3 cigarettes a day; after breakfast, after lunch and after dinner. This decision wasn’t taken lightly. If I happen to really crave a cigarette and my willpower isn’t strong enough, then having one after a meal won’t make me feel depressed for having jumped back on the wagon (and when I’m down or depressed, I tend to smoke more).

I’m now at 9 hrs and 15 minutes without a smoke. Yup, that means that I did not have one after lunch, nor did I have one after supper. After my lunch I just didn’t want to have one. I did have an itch to smoke in the middle of the afternoon, but I think that was more habitual. I’m trying to keep myself busy so that I don’t think about it much. I’m keeping my hands busy by doing some stuff around the house and by doing stuff on the computer. I’m keeping my mouth busy by chewing gum and eating some fruits. Years ago I found that if I had a craving for a cigarette that I could temporarily stave off the craving by having something sweet, like chocolate. Being diabetic, chocolate isn’t really a possibility for me (save for those yummy sugar free ice cream cones, but I can only have those in moderation). So I picked myself up some nice fruit and I’m munching on them when the urge hits me. I’m also strangely enough finding myself craving coffee. No coffee and cigarette, just coffee. I think I’m gonna have to go to Timmy’s and get myself a canister of decaf, or else I’ll be up all night, more than I am now.

Emotionally, I’ve had a couple of outbursts where I turned into a prick. I warned my wife that this was likely to happen in the first week or two of quitting smoking. I know myself, and I know that I’m going to have a short fuse for the next one or two weeks.

As for the Champix side effects I’m still suffering by a light case of insomnia and indigestion. I did also have a few mood swings. The nausea has pretty much gone away, as have the constant need to urinate. Considering some of the possible side effects, I think I’ve gotten off easy.  Now lets see if any of this changes since I’ve cut out the nicotine intake.

Quti Smoking Diary, Days -11 and -10

insomnia

Still few side effects so far have surfaced from taking Champix, even after increasing the number of pills that I have to take daily. I still suffer from some light insomnia which is highly annoying. A new side effect has popped up over the last couple of days; increased urination . It doesn’t bother me at all during the day, but I’ve been waking up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom. Combine this with the insomnia and I’m finding myself being very tired in the morning. Being tired is also making me a little cranky at times.

Quit Smoking Diary, Days -13 and -12

nosmoking There isn’t much to report for Day -13 and Day -12. I’ve had very few side effects so far. I feel a little nauseous after taking Champix, but its nothing big. I feel much better after lying down for just a few minutes. I’ve also had a bit of insomnia, but I can’t say that it’s being caused by Champix, as I was working overnights last week and am now switching back to days.  Still no abnormal/vivid dreams yet either.

Today (Monday) is the first day where I’ll be taking 2 pills. I would expect that if I was going to suffer any side effects that they’ll start over the next couple of days, seeing on how I’m doubling the amount of medication that I’m taking.

As far as the smoking is concerned, I’m finding myself smoking a little less. I don’t have a craving first thing in the morning when I get up, nor do I feel like I need to smoke right away after a meal. Hopefully this will exponentially increase to the point where I don’t want to smoke at all anymore.
