3 Months Smoke Free

Smoke free

This weekend was my 3 month anniversary of being smoke free. Those are my last 2 packs that I never smoked. These aren’t quite what was my usual brand, which was DuMaurier Premiere (formally DuMaurier Extra Light). I officially quit smoking on January 23rd. Here’s my numbers according to the Canadian Cancer Society:
My Mileage
Smoke-Free Days: 93
Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,409
Amount Saved: $521.73
Life Gained:  13 Days 10Hrs 11 Mins: 29 Seconds

I’ve also been off the Champix for over a week now, with no side effects. Instead of getting offo f them cold turkey, I took 1 1mg pill a day instead of 2 1mg pills a day. I did this for about 3 weeks. I still get the occasional craving, but I am not caving in. I can now safely call myself an ex-smoker.

Bouwmeester to Ottawa? Not Gonna Happen!

Posted: 3rd April 2009 by Luc "Sandman" G. in Hockey

bouwmeester For the last few months, the Ottawa Senators message boards, call-in shows and fan chatter have been buzzing with the sound of ‘fans’ saying that we have to get Jay Bouwmeester. As the most sought puck moving defenceman in the league, Bouwmeester is going to be a free agent this summer, but I can guarantee you that he will not be wearing a Sens jersey come October, and it all has to do with finance and the cap.

If we were somehow able to dump some significant salary, we’d only have  enough cap room to have Bouwmeester for 1 year. At the end of the 2009-2010 season, assuming the cap doesn’t go down (which it will), the Ottawa Senators will have less than 14 million to re-sign 12 players. Murray currently has about 14 million at his disposal but has a few players to re-sign or replace this summer, both of which will take away from that 14M.

And lets look at who we have to re-sign this summer:

  • Comrie: UFA
  • Neil: UFA
  • Shannon: RFA
  • Bell: RFA
  • Elliot: RFA

I would expect at minimum 3 out of those 5 players to be re-signed this summer.

Here’s who’s contracts run out at the end of next season:

  • Schubert: UFA
  • Foligno: RFA
  • Donovan: UFA
  • Winchester: RFA
  • Bass: RFA
  • Smith: UFA
  • Volchenkov: UFA
  • Picard: RFA
  • Lee: RFA
  • Campoli: RFA
  • Auld: UFA

And from the Baby Sens (and our future):

  • Zubov: RFA
  • Regin: RFA
  • Hennessy: RFA
  • Carkner: UFA

Come the summer of 2010, we’ll have approximately 9 million to re-sign all those players. Even if we replace some or most with junior players, which is likely to happen, that is still a salary that counts against the cap. Volchenkov, if we can manage to keep him, will be in for a raise (I’d expect 3.5-4.5M). Schubert and Auld are almost guaranteed to not be re-signed if they are still around. Smith is unlikely to be re-signed. Foligno and maybe Campoli are almost sure bets be to re-signed, and its up in the air for the rest.

There’s also the matter of our current highly paid players. We have 3 players making more than 7 million next year. Add Bouwmeester and that would be 4 players that would eat up more than 55% of your cap space (assuming a cap of 52M). Add Fisher’s 4M and that’s 5 players taking up 62% of your salary. Alfie, Spezza and Heatley are not going anywhere. I very much doubt any team would take on Fisher’s salary, so even if we wanted to trade him we wouldn’t be able to find a willing dance partner (that’s assuming Fisher would waive his no trade clause). No well rounded, cup  contending team can afford to have 4 players making more than 7 million in this cap era.

If by some miracle the cap space magically goes up to 65-70 million next year and is guaranteed to stay at those levels for 3-4 years and Melnyk allows Murray to spend the full 65-70M, we could afford to go after Bouwmeester. But that’s not going to happen.  If it were to somehow magically happen, I think the Sens would benefit more by getting a guy like Cammalleri, as the Sens are in need of bonafide 2nd line scorer.

April 2009 Sens Desktop Calendar

The final Ottawa Senators wallpaper calendar for the 2008-2009 season. Sadly my beloved Sens are not making the playoffs this year, a first in 12 years. Its been a rollercoaster ride, a very slow start followed by a really good finish. We have a great player core and I don’t doubt that we’ll be back to being the competitive team that we can be for the 2009-2010 season.

Battlestar Galactica: Final Thoughts

Last night a special era of television came to an end. The last episode of the groundbreaking series Battlestar Galactica hit the airwaves, with many anxious fans waiting to find out the answers to many questions that have been asked during its 4 season run. There was little disappointment, as many answers were given, many loose threads were completed, all while leaving some of these answers up to personal interpretation.

Battlestar Galactica was more than just a sci-fi TV show. It often used sci-fi as a vehicle to talk about issues that affect us, events that we see on the front pages of newspapers. War on terrorism, suicide bombers, revolutions, rape, genocide, religious fundamentalism, and many other themes were tackled throughout the series’ existence, never shying away from controversy. Not since the original Star Trek series in the 60s has a sci-fi show tackled taboo subjects, and I’m sad to think that we won’t see such another show for many years to come.

Spoiler alert! If you haven’t seen the last episode, don’t keep on reading unless you don’t mind finding out story details from a blog.

I’ll first admit that I’m a big fan of the show, so I’m probably a little biased of my thoughts of the series finale. I thought it was a pretty strong finale, with a lot of loose ends being tied up, multiple storylines ended and many answers given, all while asking some new ones. The first 90 minutes or so was purely amazing. The fight scenes between the humans and the cylons was the best fighting scenes we’ve seen on TV since the Federation-Dominion space battle. We finally were shown what the Opera house was all about. We were given a lot of information as to what the Caprica Six vision that Baltar kept on seeing was all about (I personally think it meant that they were angels, and that also meant some Cylons had souls). The fleet finally found Earth, the human civilization will continue to thrive, and all was good.

battlestar-galactica-backgrMy only beef with the episode was how they handled the whole “what is Starbuck” storyline. They pretty much made her out to be an angel as well. What I don’t understand, however, is throughout the entire series, when Baltar saw the Caprica Six angel, no one else saw her. Same in a couple of episodes where it was shown that the real Caprica Six saw a Baltar angel. Now all of a sudden, we’re expected to believe that Starbuck was an angel? An angel that everyone saw, that everyone interacted with, one that was made of flesh and bone, was seen bleeding after fights, was often drunk and other corporeal things that shown her to be just human? I think that this particular ending for that character was just a copout. I was also disappointed that there wasn’t a big goodbye scene between Admiral Adama and Tigh. Their friendship was one of the backbones of the show, and yet they didn’t even get a scene for their goodbye.

Regardless on my little beefs with the final episode, I thought it was great. BSG easily scores in my top 3 favorite TV shows of all time. We haven’t seen the last of BSG however. This fall we’ll be treated to a 2 hour TV movie called Battlestar Galactica: The Plan. Directed by Bill Adama himself, this 2 hour movie, which takes place just before, during and just after the attack on the colonies, will show events we are familiar with, but from the viewpoint of the Cylons. In 2010, a prequel show entitled Caprica will hit the airwaves.  That show will take place roughly 50 years before BSG, and will touch on the creation of the Cylons and the first Cylon war. As interesting as that show sounds, I don’t think that it will equal or surpass the series that its based on. Now I’m just hoping that they release a series DVD boxset so that I can enjoy this show again and again.

Watchmen Worth the Wait!

Watchmen. For many years uttering that single title sent shivers down comic readers’s backs. It is considered by many as being one of if not the best comic. I rate it in my top 5, along with Sandman, The Killing Joke, V for Vendetta and Batman: The Dark Knight Returns. For years Hollywood and comic book fans alike stated that Watchmen could never be made into a movie. In steps Zack Snyder, the director of another comic based movie (300), takes the Watchmen story and gives us a movie that’s as worthy of praise as the book its based on.

One of the reasons that like 300, Watchmen really works is that it very seldomly deviates from the comic that its based on. Heck, the first 20-30 minutes of the movie is a scene for scene, dialogue for dialogue copy of the first few chapters of the book. This is the closest a movie has come for capturing not only the characters from a comic book, but the story and the atmosphere as well. As far as comic book to celluloid is concerned, Watchmen does it even better than The Dark Knight or 300. As expected, some subplots were removed due to time contraints (IE: Almost all the newspaper booth stuff, and most of the Janey Slater stuff was cut back). The ending itself is mostly different, but it still conveys the same theme, atmosphere, intentions and feelings as the book. I’m not quite sure why Snyder decided to deviate so much from the original story for the ending, but it does not make it bad in any way, shape or form.

[rant]A quick sidenote: If you’re a parent, Watchmen is not Spiderman or X-Men. This movie barely missed getting an NC-17 rating in the US. This is purely an adult movie in theme and execution. In ways its even darker than The Dark Knight. If the adult nature of the story isn’t enough to keep your younglings at home, also know that there’s very graphic violence, a graphic rape scene, nudity and sexual activity, with a tiny bit of swearing tossed in. If you can’t get a babysitter, don’t go see this movie with your brats in tow. I consider myself liberal, and I would still not suggest this movie to anyone under the age of 15-16. [rant off]

I won’t get into the story of Watchmen. If you’re never read it, head on over to Wikipedia and read a very good summary as to Watchmen is all about. Although the way the movie was made, you don’t really need to know anything about Watchmen in order to enjoy it. If you have read this masterpiece, then I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

I give Watchmen a 9 out of 10 9stars
