Watchmen Worth the Wait!

watchmen_imax_poster

Watchmen. For many years uttering that single title sent shivers down comic readers’s backs. It is considered by many as being one of if not the best comic. I rate it in my top 5, along with Sandman, The Killing Joke, V for Vendetta and Batman: The Dark Knight Returns. For years Hollywood and comic book fans alike stated that Watchmen could never be made into a movie. In steps Zack Snyder, the director of another comic based movie (300), takes the Watchmen story and gives us a movie that’s as worthy of praise as the book its based on.

One of the reasons that like 300, Watchmen really works is that it very seldomly deviates from the comic that its based on. Heck, the first 20-30 minutes of the movie is a scene for scene, dialogue for dialogue copy of the first few chapters of the book. This is the closest a movie has come for capturing not only the characters from a comic book, but the story and the atmosphere as well. As far as comic book to celluloid is concerned, Watchmen does it even better than The Dark Knight or 300. As expected, some subplots were removed due to time contraints (IE: Almost all the newspaper booth stuff, and most of the Janey Slater stuff was cut back). The ending itself is mostly different, but it still conveys the same theme, atmosphere, intentions and feelings as the book. I’m not quite sure why Snyder decided to deviate so much from the original story for the ending, but it does not make it bad in any way, shape or form.

[rant]A quick sidenote: If you’re a parent, Watchmen is not Spiderman or X-Men. This movie barely missed getting an NC-17 rating in the US. This is purely an adult movie in theme and execution. In ways its even darker than The Dark Knight. If the adult nature of the story isn’t enough to keep your younglings at home, also know that there’s very graphic violence, a graphic rape scene, nudity and sexual activity, with a tiny bit of swearing tossed in. If you can’t get a babysitter, don’t go see this movie with your brats in tow. I consider myself liberal, and I would still not suggest this movie to anyone under the age of 15-16. [rant off]

I won’t get into the story of Watchmen. If you’re never read it, head on over to Wikipedia and read a very good summary as to Watchmen is all about. Although the way the movie was made, you don’t really need to know anything about Watchmen in order to enjoy it. If you have read this masterpiece, then I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

I give Watchmen a 9 out of 10 9stars

Rapid Fire #1

rapid-fire (rap′id fīr′)

adjective

done, delivered, proceeding, or carried on swiftly and sharply

passchendaele Finally, a world war movie that shows the Canadian point of view. A powerful film about the sacrifice made by Canadian soldiers during World War I. Written by and starring Paul Gross (of Due South fame), who based the story on war stories shared by his grandfather who fought at Passchendaele.

It could have used a little less romance and a little more action, but regardless its still a very enjoyable film.

I rate it a 7 out of 10.

lost This 5th season of Lost is starting off on the right foot. The 3rd and 4th season sometimes seemed to lack direction but the ship has been steered back on course. Inhabitants of the island are now travelling back and forth through time, having an adverse effect on some of the survivors. Some members of the Oceanic Six realize that they have to find a way back to the island. That their destiny is to be on the island and not back with regular civilisation.

The best season since season 2. If you stopped watching in the last couple of years, do yourself a favor and start watching this show again. Its the best show on television.

clouston-cory Craig Hartsburgh was fired from the head coach position of the Ottawa Senators earlier this week after a big loss against the Washington Capitals. He was replaced by Cory Clouston, the head coach of the Sens’ farm team in Binghamton. Though I feel the problems are a lot deeper than the coaching, it was obvious that Hartsburgh could not find a way to inspire his players. He was a good coach, just not for this team at this time. His defensive minded system did not gel with the offensively-built Senators. I’m reserving judgement on Clouston until he’s had 5-6 games under his belt, but so far the team is playing with a lot more passion and heart. Lets just hope they keep it up.

wrathofthelichking A couple of weeks ago I received an email from Blizzard offering me a free 10 day trial of the World of Warcraft expansion Wrath of the Lich King. This offer couldn’t have come at a better time. I was already itching to try it, and having given up smoking I wanted to do something to occupy my time. It was great to catch up with people in the game that I had last spoken to over a year ago when I quit playing.

So far this expansion is more fun to play than the previous expansion Burning Crusades. There’s less grinding, more quests, more variety and just more fun.  Much to my wife’s dismay, once my free 10 day trial was over I continued to play but just as a ‘casual’. There’s no way I’m going to be a raider again, as that requires a huge timesink that I do not have or which to give.

Quit Smoking I’m on day 14 of quitting smoking. The cravings still come and go, but less often and with less intensity. Every day I’m breaking more habits where I smoked in certain situations. It hasn’t been easy, but at this point I figure that there’s no point to have suffered for these 2 weeks and take up smoking again.

Now I’m just a little worried of what will happen when I stop taking the Champix. I’ve read some horror stories that the cravings come back bigtime once you stop the pills. I guess I’ll find out in a few weeks.

andre cornellier Last week the OC Transpo strike that’s paralyzed the city since early December finally came to an end. Both the city and the union agreed to go to binding arbitration. Funny how they both agree to that just as the Federal government was ready to introduce a back to work bill and just before Obama’s visit to our capital. By going to arbitration both sides save face and can state that they didn’t give in to their demands.

Buses are expected to start hitting the streets this weekend, but isn’t expected to be running at full capacity until April or May.

Lets just hope that we don’t have to go through this again in a couple of years when the new contract will be up.

Quantum of Solace: Bond Kicks Ass

Daniel Craig is back in the 22nd installment of the James Bond series, Quantum of Solace. The story is an action packed tale of revenge, resolution and just plain kicking ass.

Quantum of Solace is not necessarily a sequel per say, but a continuation of Casino Royale. The 2 movies create one big movie that just happened to have a 2 year long intermission in between. The story starts a mere minutes after the end of Casino Royale, Bond being chased through the hills of Italy by an unknown army of bad guys. This car chase sets the tone for the entire movie. We find out from the very beginning that we’re in for one hell of a ride.

MI:6 finally catches wind that there’s an international ring, but have no idea of who these people are and what they do, but they do know that they were responsible for Vesper’s death.  Bond is sent on the trail of this group and along the way meets up with Camille, a woman also bent on revenge for the death of her family at the hands of a South American dictator. Bond and Camille’s paths and destinies cross as the men they are both chasing are linked to the organization we found out is called Quantum. We can easily see this organisation playing a part of future installments of Bond movies, similar to SPECTRE in the classic Bond films

Its hard to think of this movie as better or worse than Casino Royale, since the two are so intriquintly linked together. As a Bond movie, QoS does not disappoint. We see the growth of the main character into the super spy we have grown to know in previous incarnations. As with Casino Royale, there are no gadgets, no Q and no Moneypenny. This is a more reality grounded Bond. I have to admit that though I do miss those aspect of Bond, I also believe that they will slowly be introduced in this reboot of the franchise in a more realistic way.

I thoroughly enjoyed Quantum of Solace for what it was. An action packed Bond flick with much character development. Casino Royale/Quantum of Solace are setting up the groundwork for the future of this long running franchise. I can’t wait to see what comes next.

I give Quantum of Solace an 8 out of 10.

Zack and Miri Make a Porno (and a Funny Movie)

A quick review since time seems to be a luxury I don’t have lately….

Last week my wife and I were finally able to catch the latest Kevin Smith film Zack and Miri Make A Porno. This was the first Smith movie that I didn’t get to see on opening weekend since Chasing Amy… stupid on-call got in the way.

The story revolves around Zack and Miri, 20-something year old friends and roommates who work at dead end jobs and can’t make the ends meet. Having met in the first grade, these two characters share a strictly platonic relationship that has never crossed the romance/sex line. They coast through life until one day their heat, water and electricity get cut off for non-payment (on Thanksgiving no less). Desperate to raise some money to get rid of their debt, Zack comes up with the plan to make a porno.  The idea being that at minimum their old high school friends and acquaintances would buy the flick “just so they could see someone they knew f*ck”.

They enlist the aid of Zack’s co-worker, played by The Office’s Craig Robinson, to finance the picture, an old high school videographer (Jeff Anderson, better known as Randal in Clerks/Clerks2), a want to be porn star (played by Jason Mewes) and 2 real life ex-porn stars (Traci Lords and Katie Morgan). As the shoot progresses, Zach and Miri discover that they have feelings for each other which culminates when they have shoot their sex scene. Some misunderstandings arise, causing a rift between the lifelong friends.

I found Zack & Miri to be a really good film. I did not find it as funny as Smith’s previous movies (Jersey Girl notwithstanding), but that did not affect my views of it. To compare it to Smith’s previous movies, it is similar to Chasing Amy in tone. Seth Rogen fits perfectly well in a Smith written & directed movie. The brand of comedy that we’ve become accustomed to seeing him in is eerily similar to Smith’s movies, so that casting was a perfect fit. Elizabeth Banks is believable as Miri. However,  Craig Robinson or Jason Mewes pretty much steal every scene that they are in. Those 2 play their characters superbly and have the funniest dialogues and lines in the film.

If you like Kevin Smith’s previous movies, or any movie by Judd Apatow, then you’ll surely like Zack and Miri Make A Porno.  I may be a biased Kevin Smith fan, but I give Zack and Miri an 8 out of 10.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars Is A Huge Disappointment.

Last night my wife and I joined some friends for a showing of Star Wars: The Clone Wars. As a huge Star Wars fanatic, I was looking forward to seeing this stylized animated flick. Regardless of the bad reviews, I took them with a grain of salt and hoped that it wasn’t as bad as most people made the movie to be. I wish I had heeded their warning and had not seen The Clone Wars. It was that bad.

Our first clue should have been the amount of people in the theater. A 9pm Saturday night showing of the movie, in its 2nd week of release, and there were a whopping 5-6 other people in the theater with us. It was only 5 minutes into the movie before I looked at my watch to see how much more I would have to endure of this crapfest.

The story takes place between Episode II and Episode III of the prequels. The Republic is in the middle of an all out war with the Separatists. While fighting the Battle droid army, Anakin Skywalker is given a Padawan learner, the highly annoying Ahsoka. The main plot of the movie revolves around crime lord Jabba The Hutt’s kidnapped larva errr child Rotta aka Stinky. Both the Jedis and the Separatists attempt to save and bring back Rotta to Jabba, and whomever does will be given safe passage in the Hutt controlled Outer Rim shipping lanes.

Throughout the entire movie I felt like I was watching a 90 minute long videogame cutscene. The animation itself, especially the humanoid animation, was very bad. Characters looked like they were floating/gliding when walking, the speech movements were way off and the walking movement was awkward. However, the rendering was well done, the backgrounds were for the most part beautiful, and the chalk like textures were very well done for a computer animated flick.

This being a Star Wars movie, I expected the dialogue to be cheesy, but Clone Wars takes it to a whole new dimension of cheesiness. The dialogue is infinitely worse than the Jake Lloyd/ Jar Jar scenes of the prequels. Heck, the prequels seem Shakespearean compared the the Crap Clone Wars. Suffering through Ahsoka and the Battle Droid dialogues I didn’t think things could get any worse. But oh god did they ever. Ziro the Hutt, Jabba’s gay queen uncle, has to be the absolute worse character in the Star Wars movies, far worse than Jar Jar and the young Anakin. Decked out in makeup and tattoos, the very effeminate speaking and acting slug was just jaw droppingly awful.

My friend had a theory regarding the prequels and Clone Wars. He theorizes that George Lucas is purposely out to destroy Star Wars so that no one will even want to touch that universe once he retires from filmmaking. After seeing Clone Wars that theory seems more and more probable. What was also frustrating is that parts of the movie showed tiny twinkles of potential, but every time that happened some very cheesy dialogue or plot point would rear its ugly head and totally annihilate it.

While watching the prequels, as bad as one of them was, I could at least find some entertaining aspects to them and I could see what Lucas was trying to acheive. With Clone Wars there is absolutely no redeeming qualities and entertainment value. I don’t even think this could have succeeded as a Saturday morning cartoon. I feel like good ol’ uncle George has destroyed a part of my childhood. After seeing Clone Wars, I’m not sure that I can spend any of my hard earned cash on anything Star Wars related (and that includes the upcoming Force Unleashed videogame that I was looking forward to). When leaving the theater I felt like I needed a very hot shower to get the stink off of me, and a few shots of tequilla to take away the bad taste that the movie left in my mouth.

If you’re at all a Star Wars fan to any degree, do yourself a favour and don’t watch this movie. It will ruin everything Star Wars for you and there’s no way to ignore or erase this. I give Clone Wars a 1 out of 10 stars.
