Little Visitor

When we first moved into our house, we’d often see a mother rabbit and two of her baby bunnies in our backyard. After that fall, we would only see one of the bunnies come back for a visit on almost a daily basis. Once our fence went up, the bunny would still come back from time to time, eating our grass and taunting my cats.

Today was the first time I saw the bunny in our backyard since last fall. I recently was wondering where this rabbit went. Did he get too big to crawl under the fence? Did he get hit by a car? Did he find a cute little rabbit to shack up with? Sighting him this afternoon at least tells me that he’s still alive and still around. He even let me get close enough to take a few pictures.

Restaurateur: You’re Diabetic? No Desert For You!

Posted: 9th June 2010 by Luc "Sandman" G. in Life, Restaurant, Soapbox

Why is it that most restaurants, from greasy diners to high scale french restaurants and everything in between, don’t offer diabetic friendly desserts? With diabetes on the rise, you would think that this is something that restaurateurs and chefs would start including in their menu. By omitting such a growing portion of their customer base, they are cutting out a significant portion of possible income.

How hard is it to do? With the invention of Splenda, it couldn’t be easier!  Being borderline diabetic myself, I’ve often done a straight substitution of Splenda instead of sugar in my dessert recipes with complete success. Since Splenda is not only a sugar substitute, its made from sugar, and you use the same amount of Splenda as you would sugar, making that substitution is a no brainer.

Now I only wish that restaurant owners and chefs would wake up to this fact and at least give us 1 diabetic friendly dessert option on their menus. In this day and age, I don’t think it’s a big thing to ask for.

2010 Stanley Cup Finals

Posted: 1st June 2010 by Luc "Sandman" G. in Hockey

2010 Stanley Cup logo Huzzah! I was 2 for 2 in my predictions on who was going to win each conference, though I wasn’t right in the amount of games each took to win. I don’t think anyone expected San Jose to drop out in 4 straight. That surprised everyone. Oh well, that means Heatley doesn’t make it to the Stanley Cup Finals. Boo hoo! 😛

For the finals, I predict Chicago will win it in 6. Just a gut feeling.

2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs Conference Finals Predictions

Posted: 18th May 2010 by Luc "Sandman" G. in Hockey

2010 Stanley Cup logo Man was I way off in my semifinals predictions! I went 1/4 for the last round, giving me a total of 3/12 so far in these 2010 Stanley Cup playoffs. I’m not doing so well this year am I?  Hopefully my predictions for the conference finals will fare a little better. With only having to pick 2 teams out of 4, the odds are that I won’t do too badly 😛

Eastern Conference Finals

Its the battle of the underdogs. Both teams went to 7 games in their last series. Both teams are tired and are fighting through injuries. Both teams weren’t expected to get out of the first round, let alone make it to the conference finals. Even though the Flyers are playing with their 3rd string goalie, I think that they’re the team that will represent the Eastern conference in the finals.

Prediction: Flyers in 6

Western Conference Finals

The San Jose Sharks, and more specifically “Big” Joe Thorton seem to be shedding the choking issues that have plagued him and the team over the last few years. But they’re going up against a young and hungry Chicago team. Will Hossa make it to the Stanley Cup finals a 3rd year in a row with a 3rd different team? I think he will.

Prediction: Blackhawks in 7

Building Shelves

Posted: 2nd May 2010 by Luc "Sandman" G. in Life

I finally decided to bring some order to our storage room in the basement by building some shelves. First came the shelves to hold the multitude of comic books that I own.

Did the long one with the help of my dad, and mostly did the small ones by myself, which is a great accomplishment. See, I’m not what you call a handyman. I suck when trying to do projects alone. I’m great at following directions and helping, but building something from scratch solo? Not so much.

I attempted to do the second shelving by myself to see how much I could do. First I needed to prep the area. The people who built my house cut a few corners, one being a plank of pressed wood that just stuck out from under the stairs. Instead of cutting it they just left it there. Seeing how it was going to be in the way, it had to go before anything else could be done.

Next came finishing putting up the drywall and building and putting up a wall. Not only does it look nicer, but it also helps to have something to drill part of the shelves in. Surprisingly, that’s something I was able to do solo, for which I’m very proud of myself for.

I tried to do the second set of shelves solo and managed to get the first part done, but with the water pipes being at strange places (again, shoddy handywork by the builder, doing the cheapest thing possible), I had to enlist the help of my dad. Plus putting up the 2nd and 3rd levels required 2 people and with my wife being pregnant I needed another set of hands. It took us a while to figure out how to work around the piping but we finally did it. Below are a few pictures of the final outcome.
